The Story of Captain Bill McCoy
The Real McCoy Rum is based on the story of Captain Bill McCoy, a so-called rum runner from the days of Prohibition. Around 1920, when alcohol was strictly banned in the U.S., McCoy began transporting rum from the Caribbean to off the coast of New York. Being a shrewd businessman, he sold his rum in international waters. By doing so, he did not break any American laws and the buyers bore the risk. He became known for his high quality standards, because at the time he was one of the few (if not the only) who did not stretch the rum with other liquids.
Back to the present
In memory of Bill McCoy, his tradition is carried on today. The high quality standards are met by none other than Richard Seale, master distiller of the Foursquare Distilery in Barbados.
R.L. Seal is a 4th generation distiller. He is appreciated worldwide for his excellent work. He is not a friend of dishonest products. His bottlings stand for honest craftsmanship, which are not sugared or perfumed or colored or otherwise extended. Furthermore, his age statements regarding the products always correspond to the real age and are therefore never a blend with younger rum. The Real McCoy is made from a combination of pot still and column still and matures between 3 and 12 years in ex-bourbon barrels. Exceptions are limited editions, for which a cask finish is often used..
