The history of Habitation Depaz dates back to 1635. It is located on Martinique, a Caribbean island of rugged scenic beauty belonging to the Lesser Antilles. The French overseas department has a distinctive culture with a mixture of French and West Indian influences.

The sugar cane from which Depaz rum is made grows in a unique terroir in Martinique, on the Montagne Pelée volcano.

You will find there all the ingredients of a tropical climate favorable to the development, which gives the best of itself in this place:

The combination of exceptional sunshine and abundant rain, combined with the meteorological alchemy of the volcano and the fact that it peaks at an altitude of 1395 meters, makes it so special. A young, light and filtering soil that imposes on the sugar cane a deep rooting and a metabolism favorable to the accumulation of sugars.

Thanks to these assets, the soils where the sugar cane grows have been classified as Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée of Martinique since 1996. An appellation of origin that perpetuates the close link between the natural elements of water, sun, earth, as well as the knowledge of the men and women of Depaz, through the generations.
