Destileria San Bartolomé de Tejina

When we talk about rum or honey rum, why do we refer to the Canary Islands? Doesn’t rum come from the Caribbean? True, but its origin is actually from the Canary Islands. Sugar cane, the raw material for rum, was the first and most important export product of the Canary Islands and Spain right from the early days of the Spanish era. In 1513 it made its way to Brazil and the Island of Santo Domingo; and from there to Cuba. Almost instantly it was also cultivated in the Caribbean, where it adapted perfectly to the climate and was grown in vast areas. Therefore, a reference to the role of the Canary Islands must be made when we talk about rum and its history.

Today rum is deeply rooted into the Canary islanders’ traditions and customs and has always been present in the culture of the islands.

The Distillery of San Bartolomé de Tejina was founded in 1948 in Tenerife. Every August the people of Tejina were having harvest festivals. The distillery encouraged the landowners to plant sugar cane and started to buy it by weight. They were grinding it in a mill and produced brown sugar and sugar cane honey. Shortly thereafter they started to produce rum. Since then the distillery maintains the tradition of genuine Canarian rum, which is elaborated by a precise selection of spirits from the distillation of fermented sugar cane juice.

Currently the Distillery of San Bartolomé de Tejina has a production capacity of 1.218.692 bottles / 912.542 litres per year a hold capacity of 80.000 litres in American oak barrels for maceration and aging.
