A.H. Riise Rum

This exclusive rom has been designed as a celebration to one of the most significant and entrepreneurial Danes; Pharmacist and Councilor A.H. Riise. A.H. Riise was living and working on the former Danish West Indian Islands in the period 1838 to 1878.

A.H. Riise originally originated from the small Danish Island Ærø where he was born on the 11th of September 1810 in Brogade 28 in Ærøskøbing. After graduating from the Royal Vajsenhus Pharmacy in Copenhagen he went off to the Caribbean’s. As Master of Science in Pharmaceuticals Albert Heinrich Riise  was the first pharmacist in St. Thomas who by Royal Decree in 1838 obtained the privilege of operating a pharmacy in the capital of the Danish West Indies, Charlotte Amalie.

Equipped with a large stock of different kinds of items, especially pharmaceuticals, St. Thomas Pharmacy became known in all the surrounding Caribbean islands as a place where anything and everything was available that one may need in a household.

Later A.H. Riise traveled around most of the Caribbean, and eventually visited neighboring islands all the way down to Trinidad, partly for business purposes and to gather in provisions. Back from these travels A.H. Riise often brought rare plants and herbs to St. Thomas and replanted them on returning home. Riise had a lively interest in botany and utilized with great skill the Caribbean’s exotic flora and fauna for the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, alcohol and cosmetics. Among other things, Riise created the well-known Riise’s Bay Rum, a scented water, who was a great contributory in A.H. Riise’s future prosperity.

Over the years A.H. Riises Rums has been honored and awarded medals at various competitions and exhibitions. The first one was given to Riise in 1893 at the World Exhibition in Chicago, held to mark the 400 anniversary of Christopher Columbus discovering America.
